Well Abandonment
When a well is no longer usable or needed, it must be properly abandoned. It's the law, and it protects the aquifer everyone shares.
Under Ontario's MECP Reg. 903, an unused well must be abandoned by a licensed well contractor/technician. The regulations are very specific: the well is typically filled with bentonite and/or cement grout so as to protect it from becoming a pathway that could allow contaminants into the aquifer. We may also use casing perforating and/or overdrilling to grout the annulus as part of the well abandonment process.
We handle everything from simple domestic abandonments to flowing well abandonments (including inside garages and next to new houses; it happens more than you'd think) and municipal wells in pump houses.
Not sure if that old pipe in the yard is a well? Our well maintenance guide covers how to spot old wells. Or just send us a photo and we'll tell you.
